Cambridge Sword is primarily a fencing club for young people although the advanced sessions are open to adults. Our coaching team, led by Pierre Harper who is a very experienced former Olympic fencer, is able to offer excellent coaching in foil for all levels.

Fencers from Cambridge Sword participate in competitions ranging from local events to international ones. There are opportunities for everyone to try out their fencing skills outside the club when they feel ready.

Where & When:

During term time:

Mondays from 3 to 4:15pm and from 4:30 to 5:30pm at Comberton Village College for beginner and intermediate fencers (youth only). Coach: Pierre Harper.

Mondays from 7 to 9pm at the Netherhall School for intermediate and advanced fencers. Coach: Pierre Harper

Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30pm at the Netherhall School for beginner and intermediate fencers (youth only). Extra coaching is available from 8:30 to 9pm for those interested. Coaches: Sarah Paveley and Fiona Turnbull.

Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6pm the Perse Upper School for beginner and intermediate fencers (youth only). Coaches: Pierre Harper and Melissa Overbury

Wednesdays from 7 to 9pm at the Perse Upper School for intermediate and advanced fencers. Coach: Pierre Harper

What It Costs:

Monday afternoons: 3pm £6 per session; 4.30pm £5 per session. Fees are payable termly in advance. Protective clothing is provided.

Wednesday afternoons: £7 per session. Fees are payable half termly in advance. Protective clothing is available for hire.

Tuesday: £8 per night for 6:30 to 8:30pm plus £2 for the optional extra half hour to 9pm. Fees are payable half termly in advance. Protective clothing is available for hire.

Monday and Wednesday evenings: £8 per session for youth fencers and students and £10 for adults. Block payment of fees entitles fencers to 15 min individual lessons on a rotational basis. Guests have priority for the 15 minute queuing lesson held every session.

Coaching:

Pierre Harper: three time Commonwealth gold medallist and former Olympic fencer, Pierre is a very experienced and successful coach. Pierre is also the head coach at Newham Swords in London and involved with the British Cadet and Junior teams.
Sarah Paveley:
two time Commonwealth silver medallist, Sarah is an experience coach and is involved with the British Junior Women’s team. Sarah also runs the All For One club at Linton and Parkside.

Fiona Turnbull: a Level 2 coach who still finds time to compete at epee, Fiona also runs the Walden Blades club in Saffron Walden.

Melissa Overbury: a foilist and a sabreur, Melissa fenced for the Women’s First team at Cambridge. She has started an after school club at St Mary’s School and is keen to contribute to the development of youth fencing in the area.
