About our courses

Beginner’s course

Runs from 8:00pm-9:00pm on Thursday nights at Netherhall Upper School sports hall.

The course is structured to take you from no experience to the ability to conduct a proper fencing match. A general warm-up and some stretching is followed by a footwork session and technical partner exercises.  All of the fencing equipment will be provided. The course is geared towards adults (16 +). Younger children should contact the Cambridge Cadets or Cambridge Sword. Following the course you may participate in the electric fencing circuit within the club and/or join the Intermediate Course, enter competitions or take up the other weapons fenced by the club.

The course is taught by experienced, qualified fencing coaches.

Cost

The course costs £70 for 10 weeks and includes club membership and use of all equipment (mask, weapon, jacket and glove).

What you need to bring

Please bring clean sports shoes and comfortable clothing. You’ll need to be able to freely move and stretch your legs so tracksuit trousers are best. Shorts or skirts should not be worn. You might want to bring a bottle of water.

Registration

Please send three items to the address below to be registered for this course

  • A cheque for £20.00 (made out to Cambridgeshire Fencing Club); this will count towards your course fee.  The balance will be collected on the first night of the course.
  • Cambridge Fencing Club Membership Form marked Beginners
  • For insurance purposes, the Social Membership form with British Fencing (British Fencing – Social Membership Form); their fee is already included in the course fee [in case you are a member of the BFA, you do not need the Social Membership]

We are happy to hand back or destroy this cheque if you cancel your registration within 1 week before the start of the course. If you do not show up on the first night and we do not hear from you, we reserve the right to give your space to someone else. If we cannot fill your space, we will cash your cheque. If the course is full when we receive your cheque, you will be put on a waiting list for this course only and we destroy the cheque if you do not make it into the course. We will notify you if the course is full and you are on the waiting list and of any change in status. If you do not hear from us, assume that you are successfully registered.

Intermediate course

Runs from 8:00pm-9:00pm on Thursday nights at Netherhall Upper School sports hall and is open to all Cambridge Fencing Club Members.

The intermediate course is a structured course that builds on a basic level of fencing proficiency. More sophisticated weapon techniques are combined with elementary sequences to prepare for fencing bouts. Apart from partner exercises, fencing matches on the electric box are planned. All fencing equipment, including electric gear is supplied by the club. The cost is £70 (£10 plus club membership £60) for 10 weeks.  Concessions are available at our discretion.  As club members, course participants are entitled to use the full facilities of the club when not involved with the course.

Registration

Existing members and fencers who have completed a beginners course do not need to register.  Simply pay club membership as normal, with the additional £10 course fee, at the beginning of the relevant term and inform the Intermediate Coach that you wish to join the intermediates course.

New fencers to the club, i.e. Fencers who have not fenced for a while and wish to join the Intermediates Course as a refresher course should complete the registration as per the beginners course, marking the form as Intermediate.
