Despite a number of international fencers it came as a surprise that both events were won by our friends from the colonies. Chris Flounders from New York City (now Salle Gadaski) clinched the title in a nail-biting 15:14 fight against Eryn Spinlove (Birmingham). A Canadian business man on a 7-day trip to Cambridge had brought his kit along and won the men’s title in an equally close final (Dave Arthurs, Ottawa – Gareth Rouse, Haverstock; 15:14). During the prize presentation under lovely blue skies, the organisers managed to forget mentioning the proud achievement of their most regular attendant, Ivan Ward from Huntingdon, who had just enjoyed his 26th consecutive Open Air.

Age groups for competitors are under 9 (born 1999-2000), under 11 (born 1997-1998), under 13 (born 1995-1996) and under 15 (born 1993-1994).

Closing date for entries is 25 October 2008 (by postmark) and entries should be accompanied by payment of £14.50. Entries without payment may be discarded. This is a very popular event, and the organisers reserve the right to restrict the number of entries. Late entries may be accepted at the organisers’ discretion at a cost of £20.

All fencers must fill in the Cambridge Fencing Club Membership Form and return it to the Treasurer, with payment if required at some time during May. New members will be required to fill in the form on joining. Each fencer will then have to resubmit the application form annually, at the start of the term in which they joined. So for all of you current members that would mean May 2009.

All current members, who should be BFA members, will need to put their BFA number and expiry date on the form. If your membership has lapsed, then you have a few weeks to get it reestablished.

New members, i.e. those who have just completed a beginners course / intermediates course can apply for Social membership using the form available from British Fencing Social Membership. This will need to be completed with Name, Address, Date of Birth and Telephone number, Signed and returned to the Treasurer along with the completed Cambridge Fencing Club Membership Form.

The course It is a structured course taking you from zero to the proficiency to conduct a proper fencing match. All equipment (weapon, jackets, mask, glove) and tuition is provided. Please bring some sports shoes and comfortable clothing. The cost is £70 for 11 weeks including club membership for the course duration and until the end of term. Concessions are available at our discretion.

Please send a cheque for £10.00 (made out to Cambridgeshire Fencing Club) and completed registration form to the address below to be registered for this course. This will count towards your course fee. We are happy to hand back or destroy this cheque if you cancel your registration within 1 week before the start of the course. What is it?

The Cambridge Open Air is a men’s and women’s open epee competition fought in the open air - an unusual competition supported by people who return to compete year after year. We are now past our 25th year of running the competition.

Where and when?

The 2008 Cambridge Open Air was held on Sunday 6 July at St Bede’s School, Cambridge.

The 2009 Open Air will be announced in early 2009.

Entry

Entry costs £15 per fencer (£20 late entry fee at organiser’s discretion). Only entries with fees will be considered. Full BFA/FIE membership is required. Membership application on the day (payable by cheque) subject to BFA regulations. Clothing regulations will be strictly enforced.

 The next Intermediate course will run on Thursdays 10 Apr – 1 May and 3 – 31 July, 8 –9 pm. Participants will learn during the first 5 weeks to conduct a fencing match at the electric box in preparation for the May/June break. The fee will be £70 - including club membership for the complete summer term (May – Aug). Concessions are available at our discretion.

The course is a structured course that builds on a basic level of fencing proficiency. More sophisticated weapon techniques are combined with elementary sequences to prepare for fencing bouts. Apart from partner exercises, fencing matches on the electric box are planned. All fencing equipment, including electric gear is supplied by the club. The cost is £70 for 10 weeks including club membership for the course duration and until the end of term. Concessions are available at our discretion.

You’ll need to be a full BFA member, so if you’d like to enter, visit the British Fencing Association membership page and join up. Membership includes personal accident and civil liabilities insurance, copies of The Sword magazine, and eligibility to enter many competitions.

The open competition has a minimum age of 15, while the junior groups are as follows:

Juniors: born from 1988 to 1990

Cadets: born from 1991 to 1992

Minimes: born from 1993 to 1995
